These days there are so many restrictions on firewood that it's hard to deal with. I won't get into all of them, but you have to buy from local vendors, approved by the DNR, with Kiln dried wood to kill any bugs, and you can't transport it more than 30 miles, and so on. At some point it's either charcoal or gas. :-(
